This strap guide is my attempt at confronting my own fears. Nowadays, you would be hard pressed to spot the sunny glint of yellow gold at your local watch group meetups. Collectors (and brands) have in more recent years focussed on rose gold and, to a lesser extent, white gold, as the couleurs du jour. A piece that I felt represented the brand and German watchmaking as a whole, while also introducing yellow gold to my collection for the first time.Ĭonfession: I was terrified of yellow gold at first, unsure about when/where/how to wear it. Later, it was: “ok… I will be adding a Lange 1… but which one”!?!? Where I landed, after a prolonged period of “analysis paralysis”, was on a now discontinued Lange 1 in yellow gold. Then, it was doubts around how a Lange 1 would fit into my collection, more importantly, lifestyle. At first, it was the hesitation of buying a piece that expensive. I had been pining for a Lange 1 for a couple of years, but something or the other was always holding me back. Since then, the Lange 1 line’s instantly recognizable (albeit somewhat polarizing) design language has become synonymous with the German brand and elevated to icon status, joining the ranks of the Calatravas, Tanks, Speedmasters and Submariners of the world. Of those, it was the Lange 1 that went on to become the company’s flagship. Lange & Sohne rose from the ashes and reentered the horological world with a bang in 1994, it did so with 4 models, all in yellow gold. Be in no doubt: if you’re in the market for an El Primero, this is the size to get. Secondly, because it’s quite thick, it actually wears a good 1-1.5mm larger than its dimensions would have you believe. What's not to like about it!ĭelugs approached me for a strap guide and of course as a 'strap guy' I had to play along. Firstly, because it’s 38mm, it’s going to offer excellent bandwidth for a great many different people. And don't forget that new El Primero movement boasting 1/10th of a second precision and time measurement. The new OG (full ref: 03.3200.3600/69.C902) has, in my opinion, a nicer case and the dial is just looking a bit fresher. This newer version is closer to the original ZEP and I took the offer. A watch buddy asked if I was interested in his spot on the waitinglist for the new El Primero Original. I enjoyed it a lot over the years and put all kinds of straps on it. That particular El Primero turned out to be quite a strap monster. Without hesitation I sent the guy a message and the next day I drove down to pick it up. Not much later a 1 year old El Primero was put up for sale at the forum. I had no idea, the Zenith was also available in 38mm! Feeling ecstatic the hunt was on again. Half a year or so went by and I became a frequent contributer on that Dutch watch forum when on a certain day someone posted a wristshot of an El Primero. A 17cm wrist like mine is not able to pull that off (imho) so I moved on feeling a bit sad as I truly loved those colorful sub dials. Who needs a Speedmaster when a beauty like the El Primero exists right? Soon my search started to get that grail and then it happened, the size, 42mm. From the moment I saw that tricolore dial I was hooked. It was only December 2016 when I really started this hobby and stumbled across a Dutch watch forum and the Zenith El Primero.
